Pittsburg State University, Pitt State or PSU for short, is a public university located in Pittsburg, which is a city in Crawford County, in the US state of Kansas, with a population estimated at a number of more than 19 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census, fact which makes it the most populous city in Crawford County and in southeastern Kansas.
Pitt State was founded in 1903, first starting as Auxiliary Manual Training Normal School, which, after 10 years, became a 4-year college known as Kansas State Teachers College of Pittsburg. In 1959, the institution was renamed again, as Kansas State College of Pittsburg, which turned into Pittsburg State University on April 21, 1977.
Today, PSU offers its students, who number approximately 7 300, various educational programs, in numerous fields of study, through several colleges, which are the following: College of Arts and Science, Kelce College of Business, College of Education and College of Technology.
Pitt State's athletic teams are known as the Gorillas, who compete in Division II of the NCAA, in various sports, including in football, the university's football program being the winningest program in Division II history, the team being national champion 3 times - in 1957, 1961 and 1991. Overall, the Gorillas have won a total of 27 conference championships during the 96-year history of its intercollegiate program, as well as 13 conference titles in the last 19 seasons under Coach Chuck Broyles, reaching the Division II National Championship game in 2004, 1995, and 1992.
The distinctive colors of the Gorillas are crimson and gold, and their mascot is Gus the Gorilla.
